Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”

What is trust and to whom we shall put our trust? A good question is it not?

This is a father’s counsel to his son. But why? How important is this in our life practically and spiritually speaking?

Trust is having confidence, and in this verse, the father is instructing his son to put his confidence not in anyone else nor even in himself, but in Yahweh himself, the God who gives life, who takes away life, who saves and secures.

It is clear here that leaning on your understanding is not a wise thing to do. By contrast, what can a son or a man boast about himself? Nothing! Yahweh created all things and knew all things.

As human beings, we are prone to fail and quick to faint. We are like flowers that can easily wilt under the scorching sun rays. We cannot live a peaceful and secure life apart from God. Practically speaking, putting our trust or confidence in Yahweh makes us at peace. This means, that we are living a life under his guidance and care because He knows better and is able to sustain our needs.

Spiritually speaking, in times of spiritual trials and dryness, we know where to go, and that is to Yahweh our Father who can comfort and strengthens us. This will only happen when we trust Yahweh wholeheartedly. We must bring everything to God without hesitation.

There is no reason to put our trust in ourselves. We are futile and vain. We cannot save ourselves. The world teaches that self is all we need to live. This is idolatry. It is sin to say, “thank you self, glory to your self, and self, you are the best.” Created beings must realize that we are created by God and must bring glory to the Creator – Yahweh.

Where do you put your trust? Is it in yourself or in Yahweh? God knows everything and He does all things well. Trust Yahweh starting today.
