Proverbs 3:13-18
“…For her profit is better than the profit of silver and her produce better than fine gold…”
Poetically in the Bible specifically in Proverbs, oftentimes, “wisdom” is described as a woman, precious, fine, and a treasure to be sought after by any man who would like to have a lifetime partner. It says, “How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and the man who obtains discernment” (3:13).
Any person who finds wisdom will never be disappointed in having wisdom. But why? There are several compelling reasons to seek wisdom from God.
Wisdom Teaches Us What is Important in Life
- Wisdom is profitable and better than silver and gold the world can offer (3:14).
- Wisdom is more precious than any expensive and rare pearls that we can see (3:15).
We can have silver and gold, but oftentimes, these earthly treasures corrupt our hearts and lives. People’s desire for material wealth and blessings tend to forget God and worship Him. But with wisdom, whether we are well off in life or not, we can see that wisdom is far more beneficial than silver and gold or even precious stones and pearls.
Because wisdom teaches us what is valuable or not in life. Wisdom teaches us what is worthy and compels us what to keep in life like time, family, love, and a relationship with God in Christ which no material thing can offer (vv.14-15).
Wisdom Gives Us Life
- Wisdom provides longevity of life and riches and glory both literally and metaphorically (3:16).
- Wisdom provides a pleasing and peaceful direction in our lives (3:17).
- Wisdom is the source and the joy of life (3:18).
No material things can offer longevity and genuine satisfaction in life. Indeed, money can buy us a lot of things that aid our life, but it has limitations. It cannot secure our salvation, it cannot bring us to God, it cannot change spiritual condition, it cannot be the source of our life, it cannot bring peace, the more money you have, or less, we often become anxious how to keep it and earn it. It cannot bring true peace and joy. When a pandemic hit us, money became a god to many and useless at the same time. It is similar to any other earthly treasure.
But with wisdom and discernment coming from God in His word to us, we are secured and at peace but not complacent. Because we know what is true, what God can do to our situation, and for us, we know where to go and we know whom to call and that is our God in Christ Jesus. We are confident in life because we know we have the Holy Spirit who comforts and encourages us, and we have God’s word as the inscribed source of wisdom (vv.16-18).
Do you have wisdom from God? Seek her and be blessed by the Lord in Christ Jesus.
