It is given that there are people who not only deny the Bible as the Word of God but also hate the Bible as – the Word of God. Faithful followers of Christ – Christians believe and upholds the scripture as sufficient and authoritative for Christian living and sanctification in Spirit’s work.

Sadly, may mga skeptics and haters na patuloy na nagsasabing that the Bible is not God’s word (for they do not believe in God’s existence) but a byproduct of human projection, myth, and imagination. Ano nga ba ang reasons on why these people hate the Bible? Paano nila ito ipinapakita?

Here are a few reasons why they hate the trustworthiness of the Bible as the Word of the holy God:

1.    It Confronts Their Pride

A prideful person is a person that thinks of himself as untouchable, all-knowing, and supreme over other people. This applies to all people. The Bible teaches that God hates proud people not only the attitude of pride.

“Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate” (Prov. 8:13). A proud person will never consider the wise teachings of God’s word for he thinks that he knows everything and has no need for help. And when he failed due to his pride and arrogance, instead of humbly admitting his mistakes, this person makes different excuses to justify his wrongdoings.

No wonder the Bible calls them fools for “fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Prov. 1:7).

A proud person cannot and will not accept these truths from the Bible kaya nga they hate it. They cannot accept and face the fact that the Word of God is unwaveringly and unapologetically confronting their flawed attitudes.

When a fool or a proud person is corrected and instructed even in the right and honest manner, they will show a defiant and critical spirit. I have experienced this before when I lovingly and gently rebuked a confessing Christian friend about his current secret relationship with an unbeliever is a sin knowing that he is a promising youth leader.

I remember he said to me, “this is the will of the Lord, no one cannot stop our relationship.” After that day, he stops attending the church and didn’t come to our small groups despite our invitations and follow-ups.

Sabi sa Proverbs 18:2, “A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.” They hate understanding and they hate the Bible because they don’t like being confronted by its truths.

2.    It Convicts Their Conscience

As we look around at our culture and other people’s cultures inside and outside our nation, we cannot deny that there are different worldviews, ideologies, and beliefs. Indeed, these became the driving force for one’s actions and behaviors.

The hate of people towards the Bible ay bunsod ng kanilang mga distorted and diabolical na worldviews and ideologies. They do not like the fact that the holy scripture embodies objective (factual) and absolute (pure) truth which is fully manifested in Christ Jesus.

Many say that the Bible is irrelevant and filled with contradictions. Kung babasahin natin carefully and with proper rubric ang scripture, we will see how relevant and cohesive the Bible is. For example, the story of genocide and brutal killings in the book of Judges. Many haters of the Bible use this argument to say God is not a loving God but a brutal and punitive God.

The fact of the matter is, that the Bible shows how corrupted man is, and to display God’s justice and holiness, punishment must be served to those who do wickedness whether chosen people ka pa or hindi.

This is what happened to God’s people, they were exiled for being a corrupt and idolatrous nation. God brought suffering to them as a form of discipline for their wickedness.

People who say the Bible is irrelevant will inevitably be convicted by the reality of conscience and death. The Bible is brutally honest. Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The soul who sins shall die.”

In Romans 2:15, “the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.”

Our conscience shouts vehemently that we have violated God’s law. Haters of the scriptures do not like the feeling of guilt brought by the truths of the bible because it challenges their beliefs, contradicts their opinion, and destroys their idols. Truth offends them.

They basically hate being convicted by the word of God for they love the things that God hates.

3.    It Exposes Their Wicked Sins

The Bible says, “We know that we are of God and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one”(1 John 5:19). As we can see, there are wars against other nations, rebellion, anarchy, violence, spiritual decadence, wickedness, injustice, sexual immorality, and promiscuity that are rampant in every culture and society around the world.

It is almost rare to hear a piece of good news on our radio or television. And when we saw a good Samaritan on the news or social media, it becomes a trending topic. People become numb and already desensitized by wickedness. People feel nothing about their sins and their conscience becomes seared and twisted.

Thus, when we preach and use the verse like Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”, “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins” (Ecc. 7:20), or Romans 5:8 that says, “As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one”, haters of the Bible will label us “intolerant”, “insensitive”, “harsh”, and “unloving people.”

The Word of God is relentlessly and unbendingly telling us that we are all sinners. We are corrupted and incapable of saving ourselves from the sting of sin. The reason why there are people who hate the Bible is that it exposes their sins and uncovers their true nature – lovers of sin.

That is why many people give much effort to distorting the Word of God, maligning the scripture as unreliable, outdated, mythical, impure, anti-human, anti-freedom, and errant to cover and justify their wicked lifestyle.

The pro-choice movement advocates the killing of babies in the womb which is murder according to the scripture (Exo. 20:13; Deut. 5:17). LGBTQ+ movement advocates homosexual union, kasama din ang mga adulterers, and fornicators which are detestable talaga sa mata ni God (Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10).

Hating the word of God is denying the truths of God. Haters of the scriptures do not like their sins to be exposed in the light.

Wrap Up

Telling what is true according to the word of God is not judgmentalism. Both you and I are sinners sa harapan ng Panginoong Dios. I was once a hater of truth because I love my sinful life before but by the patience and unceasing grace of the Lord, I am saved in Christ alone, by faith alone, through grace alone (Eph. 2:8-10).

As I end, regardless of who we are, the Lord continues to speak to us through the word and show us the purpose of life and how to have meaningful and joyful life through Jesus Christ the Son of God despite the reality of suffering, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

It is normal to have doubts about the Bible since we don’t know what it is yet. I encourage you to grab your copy, open it, read it, and study it carefully and correctly so that you can prove on your own if the Bible is truly God’s word or not.

As for me, it is clear, that the Bible is God’s inerrant, sufficient, and authoritative word. It passed the test of times and every scrutiny of science, logic, conscience, and commonsense and I will continue to examine and study it for my sanctification and joy in the Lord. Amen.
