Psalm 1:1-2

“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Yahweh, and in His law he meditates day and night.”

The Bible is clear that a favorable man in the sight of God is a man who does not give into sin, who practices and enjoys the way of the sinners for he knows that such things will not give glory to God but only enmity with God (v.1).

But this is just half of the picture. Those who do no wrong are doing good but not doing better or best. The psalmist completes the portrait of a blessed man by stating the contrasting reality between the wicked and the blessed in verse 2.

A blessed man does not only run away from sin but also moves and runs towards God. There is no middle ground. He is either an enemy of God or a child of God, away from Yahweh or in the presence of Yahweh.

This blessed man has a noticeable character that separates him from the rest. He is driven to know Yahweh, enjoys Yahweh and acts for Yahweh. In other words, his mind, heart, and will are all centered in Yahweh and God’s word.

A man who delights in God is a man who knows who God is. When we know more about God and His character, it changes us. It enlightens and renews our minds from sinful thoughts. And the key to this is by poking our nose into the Bible to know Him better and deeper. By His word, we get to experience Yahweh through Christ and the Holy Spirit working in us. Because when he sees, reads, studies, and meditates on the word, he sees and encounters God. Our affection is being transformed and fortified. And when this happens, it results in glorifying obedience to the Holy God. This is the byproduct of our daily meditation on God’s word.

This is what separates a blessed man from the wicked. A blessed man is saturated with God’s word and what gives this man ultimate pleasure and makes him passionate about is knowing, experiencing, and obeying Yahweh.

How about you? What drives your life? Is it your passion to know, experience, and obey God, or this world? Is it the beautiful word of God or the things of this world?

Do you desire to be a blessed man portrayed in this psalm? or the wicked man hated by God?

It’s time for you to choose. Choose Yahweh, meditate on his word, and be saved in Christ.
