Proverbs 4:20-22
“My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your sight; keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those who find them and health to all their body.”
“Where shall I go?”, “I just need somebody to talk to”, “I am just confused in this life, and I do not know what to do” and “this life is hopeless”. These are the words that I often hear from people whose eyes are closed to see wisdom.
Wisdom is given by God and sought as well. But to keep it is another thing. Since it is always portrayed as a treasure and as a companion to care for, it also means that sometimes it does not show up in the times we need it the most.
How do we keep it and not depart from it? and why must we keep it?
The answer to why is handy. Because wisdom gives us an understanding of the meaning and purpose of life and that is for the glory of God and our joy in Him. It helps us as well how to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to our Creator and honorable to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
It helps us as well to understand our context and situation and leads us to better decisions and actions because wisdom is the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
To keep it is a challenge. Because by nature, we are sinful and our old self cries to be selfish. It’s like a tag of war between wisdom and foolishness. For us to keep wisdom, we must always be reminded of it and intentionally be aware of it. Since wisdom is truth, God is wisdom, we must see and meditate on it all the time. Memorize God’s truth and treasure it in our minds and hearts.
These are the places where to keep wisdom. The body will follow once wisdom is acclimated in our hearts. We are forgetful by nature. So, the solution is by reading the word, studying the word, applying the word, and depending on God’s work are the ways to keep it in our lives.
Do you keep wisdom in your heart? Depend on and obey our Lord Jesus Christ.
